Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that creates micro wounds in the skin to stimulate collagen production. We can add PRP (platelet rich plasma) to this treatment to take advantage of the body’s natural healing process to treat a variety of skin conditions. To achieve optimal results, a series of multiple treatments is typically recommended.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) refers to a sample of blood plasma that has as much as eight times more than the normal amount of platelets. This treatment enhances the body's natural ability to repair itself and is used to improve healing and shorten recovery time after microneeding

What it is

Microneedling uses a handheld device that uses extremely sharp, sterile needles to puncture the skin and stimulate collagen. Adding PRP in addition to microneedling has been shown to make the treatment more effective because the PRP contains proteins, including growth factors and cytokines, which help skin tissue repair itself and regenerate.

How it Works

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure with very little downtime. Our injector will take a blood sample and then use a spinning tool called a centrifuge to separate the PRP from the rest of the blood. Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and a numbing cream will be applied prior to the treatment. During the treatment, your own PRP will be applied to the treatment area. You may feel some warmth and a scratching/pulling sensation as the device moves over your skin, but the numbing cream should keep pain to a minimum. Immediately after treatment, your skin will likely be red and swollen; this can last up to a few days. You can return to your normal routine immediately after the procedure, but you should stay out of the sun until your skin heals.

FAQ

  • Microneedling cannot be done on an area with an active bacterial, viral or fungal infection. It is contraindicated in patients with active acne, skin related autoimmune disorders, rashes, warts, skin cancer, patients on anticoagulants, women who are pregnant or lactating, history of recent ablative dermal procedures, actinic keratosis, rosacea, diabetes, and keloid scars.

  • For best results, it is beneficial to use a retinol product on your skin for 6 weeks prior to starting a microneedling series. However, you should avoid any retinol products on your skin for 2-3 days prior to your appointment.

  • Side effects are minimal with this type of treatment and typically include minor flaking or dryness of the skin with scab formation in rare cases.

  • After your treatment, you will be sent home with products to use while your skin is recovering. Your skin may appear pink or red, like a sunburn, for 24-48 hours after your treatment. Minor bruising is possible depending on the thickness of your skin and skin type. Post treatment instructions include no sweaty exercise or sun exposure for 72 hours. The microchannels created take about 24 hours to heal so it is recommended you avoid washing your face or using home products for this time period.
